Do not use abrasives, polishing compounds, glycerin, acidic or alkaline cleaners that can damage its mineral structure. Do not swim in the sea with your opal; over time, salt spray can damage the surface of the opal. Opal also does not like the chlorine added to pool water.
If you ask a jeweler to clean your set opal, remind them not to use ultrasonic cleaning, as this procedure can damage the surface of your gemstone. The metal should also be rhodium-plated before the opal is set.
A few recommendations: do not leave your opal on your car dashboard exposed to the sun in the height of summer, and for heaven's sake, do not take the gemstone from a warm environment and put it in a refrigerator, as thermal shock can damage the gemstone and compromise its stability.
The best thing you can do for your opal is to wear it as often as possible, and you will see that it will always retain its vivid, bright colors.
If for some reason your opal has become dull, do not despair—it can still be polished. With a laboratory specifically designed for polishing opals, OpaleMio can polish your precious opal, restoring its original colors and brilliance.
